The challenge of pre-operative planning

New technologies make surgical interventions more effective, but also more complex. Careful pre-operative planning becomes more than ever the key element for the success of the intervention. However, it is challenging to analyze and tedious to process the huge amount of available patient-specific anatomical, biological, and functional information. In addition, clinical routine is highly determined by tight schedules, high cost pressure and regulatory demands.

So how can modern pre-operative planning be efficiently integrated into standard clinical routine? At 1000shapes we provide tools to make pre-operative planning extremely easy for the surgeon while exploiting the full potential of all the available data and even more.

This is how we do it:

Highly accurate and faithful patient models

We convert medical images into 3D models, which explicitly represent and quantify the patient’s anatomy to the highest accuracy possible given by the resolution of the original data. These models represent geometric (e.g. shape, location) or functional (e.g. bone density, diffusion, etc.) details of the anatomical structures, thus forming the basis for safe and reliable planning.

Illustrative 3D visualizations

We provide easy-to-understand visualizations of complex three-dimensional scenarios. Our visualizations help the surgeon to create a clear mental picture of the spatial and contextual relationship between anatomical structures. They are beneficial in communicating therapeutic approaches to fellow surgeons for consultation, teaching or research purposes. Physicians can use them to explain the planned intervention to their patients.

Quantitative assessment of planning approaches

We assist the surgeons in the decision making process. Besides accurate 3D models and illustrative visualizations, we enhance the original data with additional numerical data ranging from simple distance measurements up to results from biomechanical, elastic or flow simulations. This allows an in-depth assessment of various therapeutic options, like identifying the best surgical access paths, instruments or devices to use in an operation.

Highly efficient interactive and work-flow guided software tools

We develop intuitive interactive software customized for each concrete surgical procedure and concrete surgeon needs and requirements. Our solutions allow the surgeon to explore different options of his or her surgical approach in an easy and fun way, focusing on one thing at a time. The user is lead quickly through the planning process and thus can create patient-specific plans in little time. The surgical plan and design choices together with all 3D models and visualizations made is stored in standardized formats for further use in quality assurance, research, teaching, etc.

Transfer of surgical plans into the operating room

We provide the output for transferring a surgical plan into the operating room. All the steps taken in preparing the operation are important, as they give extra knowledge to the surgeon about the current anatomical situation, but it is equally important to transform the plan into a successful surgical intervention. From the surgical plan, we can directly export data to a navigation system or create patient-specific instrumentation like cutting-guides. Additionally, the pre-operative plan can be adjusted and refined based on intraoperative data, if available.
